Sentient SongHave you ever had a song stuck in your head that you just couldn’t get away from? A song that’s so insidiously catchy it almost feels evil? What if it actually was evil? What if it was alive?

A creature of living sound, the Sentient Song hails from a plane of existence where audio is alive and sound reigns supreme. Having slipped into our plane, it now infects people with its tune, taking control of their minds and forcing them to enact its will. Anyone who hears it joins it’s sadistic choir.

Infection Tune. The Sentient Song is passed from person-to-person and creature-to-creature through an audible infection tune.

When a PC hears the creature’s unique tune, they must perform a Constitution DC. If the roll 12 or higher, they resist infection. Otherwise, they too become a vessel for the song and do whatever they can to spread it to the uninfected.

The GM may want to give the player party Disadvantage if the Sentient Song’s infection tune is coming from multiple sources or at a high volume.

Musical Survival. The Sentient Song can never truly be killed. To continue its growth and retain its strength however, its infected hosts must be within audible range of its infection tune at all times.

Generally, this isn’t difficult. Most humanoids can at least hum and only people who resist its infection initially are immune to reinfection. An entire village might go to sleep one night and be cured just to wake up the next morning to be infected all over again by someone that the Sentient Song forced to stay awake all night.

The requirement to stay audible is still, however, the Sentient Song’s greatest weakness. Being intelligent enough to be aware of this, the Song will often take precautions to make sure its tune is never fully silenced.

Most often, this means infecting as many people as it can. It knows the value of subtlety, however, and may make attempts to hide itself when it perceive a potential threat.

Hivemind. Having no physical body of its own, the Sentient Song takes over the mind and body of its hosts. As it infects multiple people, it webs their senses together to create a linked network of eyes, ears, and mouths.

Initially, the direct influence it can exert over its host is limited. It can insert thoughts into their minds and force them to sing its infection tune. They won’t even notice its presence at this level.

As the Sentient Song spreads however, its power over its hosts grows. When it has 50 people under its thrall, it can start forcing them to perform small physical actions. By the time it’s infected 100, it can force them to perform reasonable actions.

By the time it’s infected 250 people, it has enough power to force them to do whatever it wants. At this point, the hosts will be aware that something is amiss but will be powerless to stop it.

It begins as a whisper on the wind. A melody so faint, most don’t even hear it. Except for the one who does. They hear it, they comprehend it, and it’s in their fertile brain that the infection takes root.

A creature of living song, the Sentient Song hails from an obscure plain of existence where sound is alive and dominant. Though rare, sometimes a creature from this plane slips through into the material realm where it takes form as a traveling wisp of music that takes control of anyone who hears it clearly.

Once that’s happened, its host spreads its infecting song to others through any means it can.  Patient, conniving, and angry over its inability to return to its own plane, the Sentient Song will seek to take command of its new world.
